(PHNOM PENH) — A spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has expressed optimism over the United States’ decision to set a new 10 percent global tariff, describing it as a positive development that could generate significant employment opportunities, particularly for former migrant workers.
Mr. Sun Mesa, spokesperson for the ministry, said on February 23, 2026, that the revised U.S. tariff policy would benefit Cambodia’s textile and garment industry, as well as the production of travel goods and bags — key export sectors for the country.
The development follows a ruling issued on February 20, 2026, by the Supreme Court of the United States overturning unilateral global tariffs introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Hours after the court’s decision, President Trump signed an executive order announcing a new 10 percent tariff on goods imported from all countries for a period of 150 days.
According to Mr. Sun Mesa, if the policy remains unchanged, Cambodia’s textile, garment, travel goods, and bag manufacturing sectors are expected to see further growth and stability.
He noted that the adjusted tariff could enhance Cambodia’s competitiveness and attract new foreign direct investment projects, potentially creating tens of thousands of additional jobs.
“A new 10 percent tariff from the United States will create tens of thousands of additional jobs for our citizens,” Mr. Sun Mesa said. “We have high hopes for the continued growth of our textile and garment sector, with improved stability, new investment projects, and more foreign companies entering the market.”
He added that the favorable trade environment could particularly benefit Cambodian migrant workers who have recently returned from Thailand, offering them expanded employment prospects at home.
At the same time, the spokesperson urged Cambodian citizens, youth, and returning migrant workers to strengthen their professional capabilities through education and skills development.
He emphasized the importance of adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and labor market demands to ensure long-term employability in a competitive global economy.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting workforce development initiatives aimed at aligning Cambodia’s labour force with emerging industry needs.
